Shootout Offers Only a Single Point to Marlies on Sunday

Marlies split weekend three-in-three with three points of a possible six.

The Toronto Marlies were defeated by a score of 4-3 in a shootout by the Grand Rapids Griffins – AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings – this afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum.

Toronto jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the first period on Leo Komarov’s first career AHL goal. The Marlies outshot the Griffins 6-5 in the opening frame. Defenceman Mike Kostka made it 2-0 for the home side with his second goal of the season at 4:47 of the second period. Grand Rapids cut the lead in half less than four minutes later on Gustav Nyquist’s first goal of the season. Korbinian Holzer and Tomas Tatar would add goals for their respective clubs in the middle frame, making it 3-2 Marlies heading into the final period. In the third, Nyquist tied the game with his second goal of the night. Overtime resulted in no scoring and Grand Rapids would capitalize on all three shots in the shootout to pick up the victory.
