March 3, 2009
Sitting on pins and needles. That is the general feeling for many players leading into the NHL trade deadline. Waiting to see if you’re staying or going. It can be a very unpredictable time, and it can stretch right through an organization even into the AHL level, as prospects are dealt all the time. We shall see how things pan out over the next several hours. Then, for AHL fans, next Wednesday March 11th at 3pm is the AHL Clear Day Roster announcements. At that time, we will know who is eligible to participate in the 2009 Calder Cup playoffs. Keep your ears to the ground.
A big congrats goes out to Jiri Tlusty for winning the AHL Player of the Month honours. Tlusty certainly has been playing some great hockey as of late, and his 5 goal game in February to set a new Marlies record, boosted his votes. The Marlies will need him to keep it rolling as the March towards the playoffs continue this month. It will be a very busy schedule with three 4 games in 5 day runs coming up.
Wednesday night is a big cross-conference game when the Bruins make their first ever appearance to Ricoh Coliseum. The last and only other meeting between the two clubs came on December 19th, when Tuukka Rask and the Bruins beat Justin Pogge and the Marlies 4-3 in a shootout. The game was moved to a 1pm start time in Providence to try and beat a massive snow storm that was rolling in to shut down the city. It was one of the toughest weekends of travel weather wise for the Marlies all year. It included an 11-hour ride home from Hartford after the game on Sunday. Quite the weekend leading into the Christmas break at the time. But, now I’m looking forward to seeing the rematch. No doubt, Pogge will want to bounce back from Sunday’s game against the Griffins and this might be one of those games where a couple of players have something to prove.
