A BUSY WEEK
January 29, 2010
Hey fans,
I haven’t checked in since I took part in the AHL Skills Competition and All-Star game last week in Portland, Maine. I had a blast!
You’re around some of the guys who you play against and you don’t really know. So to go to something like this and become acquaintances was nice.
For the skills competition, I took part in the Rapid Fire and the Breakaway Relay. The Rapid Fire was a neat event. They had two shooters, one in each circle and every whistle you would go back and forth trying to beat the goalie.
Having a chance to take part in the All-Star Game was pretty neat I’ve been told and I also believe that the AHL is the second best league in the world outside the NHL. To be in my rookie year and be nominated to take part in the All-Star Game was pretty special.
After being out of the lineup for a while, it was also nice to finally get back in the swing of things this past weekend with the Marlies.
Although I did play one game in San Antonio it didn’t feel like I got back into things. It was just one game and then we had the All-Star Break. To be able to get back in, dive into a three-in-three weekend and busing six hours from Grand Rapids and playing back-to-back nights was pretty nice!
It was a good weekend for me and my linemates, Kyle Calder and Andre Deveaux. I got moved to centre this past weekend. I used to play centre in college so once I got the rust off I did alright.
I started off this year playing right wing and I like it quite a bit and had no problems doing that. But moving back to centre was something I’ve done my whole life so it was like getting back on the bicycle.
This weekend we have another three-in-three. We are back home Saturday to face Rochester and then on Sunday we take on Lake Erie again. Come on down to Ricoh to cheer us on!
How about my buddy Tyler Bozak’s first NHL goal? I texted him after and congratulated him. He definitely showed some flashes with the Marlies and playing against him in college I saw some pretty nice moves that he put on so I knew it was in him.
Although my Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t make the playoffs I still caught that great game between New Orleans and Minnesota on Sunday. I was cheering for Minnesota. I like Brett Favre and the Vikings and it was quite the game but I think I have to cheer for the Saints now!
I would like to see the Saints win with so much that the city has gone through. It seems like the city has bonded around the team and how well they’re doing. I think it’s awesome and hopefully they can pull out the victory over the Colts in the Super Bowl.

VLOGGING FROM TEXAS

ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY
January 11, 2010
Hey fans,
I just wanted to update you on the injury that I suffered before Christmas. I’ve been out of the lineup for the past eight games but I’ve been working hard and making good progress. I hope to rejoin the team in Texas this weekend and play the two games down there.
Despite being hurt, I was still able to go back home for Christmas and it was great. I had a couple of days to relax and spend with family including my three-month old niece Avery Elizabeth who I had only seen one other time before, so it was fantastic.
I wasn’t quite sure what to get Avery for Christmas so I actually got her and my sister and brother-in-law a family gift, a flat-screen TV. I figured my brother-in-law could watch sports on it now and then in another year or so she could start to watch some Baby Genius and Baby Einstein!
How about the USA World Junior team? I watched all the US games and even a couple of the Canada games. A bunch of the guys had gathered at Tyler Bozak’s place to watch the New Year’s Eve game between Canada and the US.
It was a great Gold Medal game and it was funny sitting in my apartment hearing my neighbours cheering when Canada tied the game. When the US won in overtime I gave a hearty yell, a celebratory cheer to make sure they heard me.
Before I go I just wanted to talk about being named to the PlanetUSA roster for the All-Star game last week. It’s quite the honour anytime you get named to an All-Star game. I think it has a lot to do about playing with some great guys who have definitely put me in a position to succeed. It’s pretty neat to be going, especially as a rookie with so many great players in the AHL. To be able to get named in my first year is something special.
If you’re wondering the boys took it easy on me but they told me not to embarrass the Marlies.
