Marlies Kick Off Best-of-Five Series on Friday Evening in Milwaukee

Under the direction of first year head coach Steve Spott, the Marlies collected 96 points for a third straight season. Their record of 45-25-2-4 also earned the team a third consecutive North Division Title. Toronto began 2013-14 by winning three straight games on home ice, led by T.J. Brennan’s two hat-tricks over that stretch. The 25-year old blueliner would go on to win the Eddie Shore Trophy as the AHL’s Top Defenceman.

Throughout the course of the regular season the Marlies had 13 players under the age of 22 play in at least one game. Collectively those 13 skaters recorded 157 points and were crucial to the success of the team. Josh Leivo became the first player in franchise history to record 20 or more goals in his rookie season. The 20-year old Innisfil, ON native also made his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs on October 13, 2013. Second-year pro Greg McKegg also had a productive season offensively, recording 47 points and collecting his first ever 4-point game against the Charlotte Checkers. Spencer Abbott finished the season ranked second in the AHL in total assists, with 52. The Hamilton, Ontario native also set a new franchise mark for assists in a single season. In his second full season with the Marlies, goaltender Drew MacIntyre set a franchise mark of his own, collecting 29 wins and surpassing Justin Pogge for wins in a single season. The 30-year old from Charlottetown also made his first NHL start on April 10, 2014 against the Florida Panthers. 

Over the course of a 14-day road trip in the middle of January that spanned over 7200 KM, the Marlies posted a record of 5-1-0-1. The trip saw the Marlies fly from Pearson International Airport on January 9th to St. John’s, Newfoundland and continue on to Iowa, Chicago, Rockford, Milwaukee and Hamilton.

ROUND ONE ON THE HORIZON 


After finishing third in the Western Conference, the Toronto Marlies will now face the 6th ranked Milwaukee Admirals, AHL affiliate of the Nashville Predators, in the opening round of the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs.  The series will follow a 2-3 format, with Milwaukee hosting the first two games at the BMO Harris Bradley Center beginning tomorrow night. The Marlies dropped two contests to the Admirals during the regular season, without goaltender Drew MacIntyre in either game. For Milwaukee, Miikka Salomaki recorded four points against the Marlies  and 50 points on the season. The Marlies will return home on Thursday, May 1 for game three of the Western Conference Quarter-Final matchup. Games four and five (if necessary) will also be played at Ricoh Coliseum.
