Marlies Down Amerks 4-1

March 17, 2007

(TORONTO) - The Toronto Marlies took a lead just over six minutes into the divisional contest against the Rochester Americans on Saturday night and held on for a 4-1 victory. Martin Sagat scored two goals in the game, played in front of a crowd of 3,830 fans at Ricoh Coliseum, en route to earning first star of the game honours. Marlies' starting goaltender made 31 saves for his third win in four games.

For the third time in four games the Marlies were the first team on the scoreboard. With several players in front of the net chipping away at the puck, Rochester starting netminder Adam Berkhoel was unable to cover the puck, and Brett Engelhardt pushed it across the goalline at 6:39 of the opening frame. Tyson Nash and Alexander Suglobov assisted on the play.

The Americans evened the score to one goal apiece at 15:36. Stefan Meyer backhanded a pass in front of the crease to Marek Zagrapan, who himself fired a backhanded shot over the left pad of Pogge.

A little more than half-way through the second period, John Mitchell won the face-off against Drew Larman, sending the puck to Brett Engelhardt. Engelhardt passed to Dominic D'Amour, who rifled the shot past Berkhoel at 12:46.

Martin Sagat rounded out the scoring with two goals for the Marlies in the final stanza. His first tally came on a slapshot from the point just 27 seconds into the period. Alex Foster and Robbie Earl earned helpers on the play. Later in the period Sagat skated from the defensive zone down the length of the ice, maneuvering around Amerks' defenceman Andrej Sekera to lift the puck into the net for an unassisted goal at 14:46.

On Friday, March 23, Toronto visits the Syracuse Crunch - AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets - for a 7:30 p.m. game. The Marlies return to Ricoh for a 7 p.m. game against their provincial rival, the Hamilton Bulldogs, on Saturday, March 24.
