Marlies Announce Promo Schedule

A proud member of the American Hockey League, the Toronto Marlies announced Wednesday their promotional schedule for the upcoming 2007-08 season. The Marlies will open their third AHL season when they host the Rochester Americans – AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres & Florida Panthers – on Saturday, October 6 at Ricoh Coliseum at 4:30 p.m. Hockey Night in Canada broadcast legend Don Cherry, a former AHL & NHL coach of the year, will be on-hand to drop the ceremonial first puck. Cherry, a former AHL All-Star defenceman, won three Calder Cups in his career, two of which came while playing for the Americans.
The Marlies will also debut a number of new in-game fan experience features at the team’s home opener. A six-member dance team, presented by the Toronto Sun, will entertain fans at all 40 home games. A new player entrance tunnel will welcome the Marlies to the ice before every game from the northwest corner of Ricoh Coliseum. The tunnel, an inflatable goalie mask, will feature special effects such as lights and smoke as the team takes to the ice in near darkness for the first time. Popular local morning radio personality “Mad Dog” will serve as the Marlies’ new in-house public address announcer bringing yet another unique and energetic focus to game-nights on the Exhibition Place grounds.
Additional highlights of the promotions’ schedule include a team-high nine bobblehead giveaways as current Marlies, along with former and current Maple Leafs including captain Mats Sundin, are featured to underline the relationship between the two clubs. In conjunction with McDonald’s, nightly giveaways will take place in the $10 ticket “McDonald’s i‘m lovin’ it ® Zone” sections. Nickelodeon nights featuring Dora, Diego, Spongebob Square Pants and more return for the third consecutive season on four different occasions.
The Marlies will also host Toronto FC Nights as the team celebrates the first year success of Toronto’s newest professional sports franchise. A tailgate party will take place following FC’s final regular season home game versus New England on October 20 and prior to the Marlies’ 4:30 p.m. home game against Manitoba on the north plaza at BMO Field. Admission to the tailgate party is free while fans holding a ticket to that day’s FC contest will be able to purchase a discounted ticket to that early evening’s Marlies’ game.
The Marlies are also partnering with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, The Salvation Army, Canadian Forces, the Toronto Zoo, the Canadian Diabetes Association and Ontario March of Dimes in support of important charitable causes on various nights throughout the season. Last year’s Pink Ribbon Night, held in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, raised almost $7,000 representing the team’s largest charity-related initiative of the season.
